If you look above the entrance you will see a cross.

Pope Benedict XIV (1740-58) declared the Colosseum a sacred monument stating it was sanctified by the blood of early Christian martyrs. Pope Benedict XIV declared that Stations of the Cross be added to the arena. The cross is still the starting point for the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday and a place of worship for Christians year around.
